In Scrum, artifacts are essential and professional tools used by teams and developers to solve problems and manage projects efficiently and effectively. These three artifacts provide vital planning and task information to both team members/developers and stakeholders according to the project needs.
Learn What Are Scrum Artifacts and their various Types?
1. Product Backlog
The Product Backlog is a dynamic list of features, requirements, enhancements, and fixes that must be completed for project success. It includes features, requirements, enhancements, and bug fixes. This list is regularly updated and prioritized by the Product Owner to reflect the project’s evolving needs and market conditions. The Product Backlog serves as the team’s guide for what needs to be done, with items being added, removed, or adjusted as necessary based on feedback and changes.
2. Sprint Backlog
The Sprint Backlog consists of the tasks that the development team plans to complete during a Sprint. At the beginning of each Sprint, the team selects specific items from the Product Backlog that they will focus on. The Sprint Backlog is designed to be flexible, allowing the team to adapt and make changes as the Sprint progresses. This artifact helps the team stay organized and ensures that they are working on the most important tasks for the current Sprint.
3. Increment
The Increment is a step toward realizing the vision or aim of the project. It is the final, functional product that the team created during the sprint. Teams can specify and illustrate their Sprint Goals in several ways. The team’s primary goal for the sprint—what it hopes to accomplish at the end of the sprint—must not change despite this flexibility.
For example, some teams may want to finish the sprint with a new feature available to customers; in this case, the software update becoming live marks the completion of the Sprint Goal. A set of features for a later release may be completed by other teams. When the features are verified and prepared for release, in this instance, the Sprint Goal is accomplished.
