Success Story: Father Never Imagined His Son Would Achieve This… How He Built a ₹340 Crore Empire with Just ₹50,000

New Delhi:
In the heart of Sardarshahar, a small town in Rajasthan, a young entrepreneur transformed a humble family business into a ₹340 crore empire. This is the inspiring journey of Raghunandan Saraf, the man behind InSaraf—a thriving online furniture marketplace that has become a major name in India’s home décor and Sheesham wood furniture industry.

From a small workshop to a nationwide brand, Raghunandan’s story proves that vision, strategy, and belief in digital India can change everything.

From a Small Workshop to a Big Dream

Saraf Furniture was originally founded by Raghunandan’s father and uncle almost four decades ago. They began by selling handcrafted wooden furniture across various parts of India. By 1998, the family had expanded into exporting, yet they continued operating from their small shop in Sardarshahar—a shop that still exists today.

Everything changed in 2014.

Raghunandan saw the future of commerce moving online. With just ₹50,000, he built a website, uploaded photographs of their products, and launched his digital dream. The early days were challenging—limited reach, technical hurdles, and customer trust issues—but Raghunandan stayed focused. He wanted to build an online furniture destination where customers could find everything: beds, tables, sofas, décor items, and more.

Convincing His Father, Overcoming Challenges

Initially, Raghunandan’s father was doubtful. Online shopping still felt new, especially for something as large and expensive as furniture. But Raghunandan explained the potential of the digital market, the possibility of reaching customers across India, and the future of the furniture industry.

Eventually, his father agreed—and that decision changed their future forever.

Operating from a small town came with logistical limitations. Sardarshahar had no proper transportation support for large furniture shipments. Raghunandan personally approached logistics companies and convinced them to start operations in the area. It took persistence, negotiation, and determination, but he succeeded.

Building an efficient team for online operations was another major challenge. Order processing, customer service, safe packaging, and long-distance deliveries required a professional system—but slowly, piece by piece, Raghunandan created a team that matched his vision.

The Growth of InSaraf: From 2,500 Products to 6,000+

When the website went live, InSaraf showcased around 2,500 products. Today, the number has grown to more than 6,000 items across categories like:

  • Sheesham wood furniture

  • Rugs and carpets

  • Lighting (including lamps and chandeliers)

  • Home décor

  • Kitchen accessories

Beds remain the highest-selling products. The most affordable item on the site is a kitchen décor product priced at ₹999, while the most expensive is a premium bed costing around ₹2.5 lakh.

Expanding Across India: Experience Centers and Warehouses

To enhance customer experience, InSaraf opened experience centers in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Surat, and Delhi, where customers can see and feel the furniture before buying.

Their manufacturing unit, warehouse, and head office are all located in Sardarshahar, covering a massive 2.5 lakh sq ft. From here, products are shipped nationwide. The company also established four sub-warehouses in major cities to ensure faster deliveries.

InSaraf operates through two business models:

  1. D2C (Direct-to-Consumer): Selling furniture directly via its website

  2. B2B (Business-to-Business): Supplying to hotels and resorts

One of their major clients includes Hyatt Hotels, and the brand receives maximum orders from South India.

The Man Behind the Empire

Raghunandan completed his schooling up to Grade 6 in Sardarshahar before shifting to Ryan International School, Jaipur. He graduated in 2004 and later earned a B.Com degree from Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) in Delhi. In 2009, he completed his MBA in Global Business Operations.

Despite his success, he continues to live with his family in Sardarshahar and has built strong employee-friendly policies within the company
